This is a historic mining area along the south side of the Salmon River near Burgdorf, Idaho. There are also some active mines in the area. The mines should not be entered at any time, due to possible cave-ins. Forewarning: this is a natural area so be advised of animals and come prepared with enough gas, food and water. The main road (FR 318) to the mining area can be traveled by automobile, but recommend a 4wd with a lift on it. There are a lot of obstacles and brush that you have to traverse. Off FR 318 a high clearance vehicle is recommended, with a 4X4 being a better option Please Contact the McCall Ranger Station, Payette National Forest, Idaho, telephone #208 634-0400 for maps, fire info, and camp ground availability in the Burgdorf area before heading out to check openings and weather conditions.
