About this trail

Gold Lake 4x4 Trail follows the rocky lakeshore through forest in the Lakes Basin area. Designated route 12M01 provides access to Gold Lake 4x4 Campground and connections into a more technical trail network. The pin marks its east-side approach off Gold Lake Road. High clearance and 4WD are required for the boulder-strewn campground approach; do not assume that every stock SUV, connecting trail or descent into another lake basin is suitable. Camping is reservation-only through Recreation.gov, with a reservation fee: the old free, first-come camping description no longer applies. The remote campground has no drinking water, toilets or trash service, so plan to pack out waste. Check forest alerts, posted vehicle restrictions and conditions before visiting. The gallery retains the two original historical source photos.
