Independence Trail
Penrose Commons OHV access via County Road 127, Penrose, CO 81240
About this trail
Independence Trail is an extreme rock-crawling route in Penrose Commons, with large ledges and demanding climbs and descents. This is a specialist 4WD challenge, not a scenic drive for stock vehicles. Bring a suitably built vehicle, recovery equipment and experienced companions; inspect obstacles before committing. BLM identifies the route as Independence Trail T6102B and warns that specialized 4WD equipment is needed. The pin marks BLM's general Penrose Commons access location, not an individual obstacle or a surveyed trail entrance. Approach on County Road 127 and use the posted map to locate the trail. Stay on routes designated for your vehicle: nearby tracks have different width and use restrictions. Wet-weather gates close motorized access when conditions require it, and the area is closed to target shooting. Check current conditions and Colorado OHV permit or registration requirements before visiting. The original rock-crawling photograph is historical and does not establish present trail conditions.
