Mud Caves / Diablo Drop-off
Arroyo Tapiado, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, CA
About this trail
Sandy washes and eroded desert scenery link the Arroyo Tapiado area with the challenging Diablo Drop-off in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. California State Parks identifies these roads as rough four-wheel-drive terrain and the descent into Fish Creek as one-way only. A street-legal, high-clearance 4WD is needed; stay on designated roads. The pin identifies the Mud Caves area, not a trailhead, a cave entrance or the full driving route. This guide is for the driving area, not cave exploration. Avoid unstable walls and overhangs, and do not enter washes when flooding threatens. Carry water, recovery equipment and offline navigation, and check the park's latest road conditions and restrictions before travelling. Conditions can change after storms; historical photos do not establish current passability.
