Alright, we are talking about off road trails near Cheyenne, WY.  Last Warning, the off road trails mentioned are Jeep trails and 4x4 trails large/wide enough to fit a passenger vehicle - no ATVs or dirtbikes talked about here.  The first off road trail near Cheyenne, Wyoming is Pratt Creek Forest Rd. which is actually located in Colorado in the Rocky Mountain National Forest. Pratt Creek Forest Rd.  is located 69 miles SW of Cheyenne for a drivetime of one hour and fourteen minutes. This trail is great to run in the fall and early start of the winter season before the snowfall gets too built up. This trail will close in the winter months because it becomes impassable. While you are down this way I would also recommend checking out Seven Mile Creek Trail. Seven Mile is a great mountain trail/road with a few medium sized rocky areas and some shallow water crossings. Trail is gorgeous in Fall and adds a little bit of difficulty in the winter. You can see what other wheelers are saying about Pratt Creek and Seven Mile trails and other trails by visiting the Where2Wheel trails map here.

The next offroad trail near Cheyenne, WY is Kelly Flats, which is once again in Colorado, located 74 miles SW of Cheyenne for a drivetime of one hour and twenty-five minutes.  Kelly Flats 4x4 Road definitely meets the definition of rough and rugged, and is one of the more difficult trails in northern Colorado. The flats are unnerving for beginners and even the experts have to bypass on some of the obstacles. Would suggest not attempting unless expert at rockcrawling and that type of terrain and also have a highly modified vehicles for rockcrawling and boulders. At the flats you will reach elevations of a little under 9,000 feet and the trail will take you about 3 hours to complete even though it is only 10.7 miles long. Side Note: Kelly Flats is the only 4x4 trail that intersects directly with the Poudre Canyon Highway. Reminder, you can browse the offroad trails map anytime for free on Where2Wheel.  There is a good chance that since writing this article that new off road trails near Cheyenne, Wyoming have been added, so click here to view the W2W map and check the area for yourself.

The last offroad trail near Cheyenne, WY, this one actually being in Wyoming :), is Crow Creek Trail located 86 miles SW of Cheyenne for a drivetime of one hour and twenty-four minutes. Crow creek trail is located inside the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. It is approx. 8-10 miles long and is a fairly easy trail. Better in the winter when there is snow on the ground. It is a great trail for scenery with all the pines and grasslands surrounding you the whole trail! You can locate the trail inside the Pole Mountain unit National Forest, and it is between Cheyenne and Laramie. There are all different terrains from flat, to steep and hill climbs, to mud and gravel to water crossings. Please treat the land with respect and do not go off the trails! Over the last decade, Wyoming has seen a significant increase in recreation use on public land. One of the most frequently violated regulations is motor vehicles being used off designated roads or on closed roads and trails. This misuse causes extensive resource damage and disturbance to wildlife as well as to other recreation users. Please be a conscientious ORV operator and stay on designated motorized routes. Beginners as well as experts find the variety of terrain both challenging and enjoyable. Prairie City SVRA takes its name from the gold rush community that was located just northeast of the present-day park. Today, the only reminders of that 1850s community are some old mine tailings and a historical marker, California Historical Landmark #464, which is located at the intersection of Prairie City Road and U.S. 50. You can see what other wheelers are saying about Prairie City SVRA and other trails by visiting the Where2Wheel trails map here.

You will begin following the river and have to navigate a couple of rock gardens that are slightly sloped and a bit steep. soon you will cross rattlesnake creek so keep going until the trail dead ends at the stanislaus river where you can set up campMost 4x4s will have no problem with this trail, but it is narrow at some parts so jeeps work the best. The entire trail is only about 4 miles long and only takes an hour or two. Reminder, you can browse the offroad trails map anytime for free on Where2Wheel.  There is a good chance that since writing this article that new off road trails near Stockton, California have been added, so click here to view the W2W map and check the area for yourself.

The last offroad trail near Stockton, California is Slick Rock Road located 100 miles northeast of Stockton. Much of trail traverses large rock slabs giving you a little taste of Moab. Silver Creek flows over rocks beside the trail with wonderful clear pools in which to relax and play. Unique places to camp along the way. The south end of trail runs along beautiful Utica Reservoir, a scenic place to camp, mountain bike and flatwater kayak. Street-legal vehicles only. The first part of trail is moderate and suitable for aggressive stock SUVs. The last part has some challenging hardcore obstacles. A good driver in a seasoned SUV can probably get through okay. Directions: Slick Rock is three hours East of Sacramento, California, or about 2.5 hours south of Reno, Nevada. Most people approach the trail from the California side. To get there, drive up Highway 4 past Bear Valley to Lake Alpine. Turn south off the highway at the west end of Lake Alpine. There are signs for Lake Alpine Campground.
