What to pack for your first ride day

Recovery gear, water, and the three things every first-timer forgets. A checklist from the crew that runs the gates.

Wheel It Team

We check hundreds of rigs through the gate every season. The same three things get forgotten every time.

The non-negotiables

  • A rated recovery point, front and rear. A ball hitch is not a recovery point.
  • More water than you think. One gallon per person, minimum.
  • A full-size spare, mounted on a wheel. Plugs are for the parking lot.

What the veterans bring

A tree saver strap, a small trash bag, and snacks they are willing to share. Trail karma is real.

What stays home

Glass bottles, drones without a permit, and anything you cannot afford to get muddy.

The three everyone forgets

  1. Paper directions. Cell service dies at the trailhead.
  2. Dry shoes for the drive home.
  3. Your confirmation code. The gate crew needs it, and it is on your booking.

Every ride day lists its own requirements before checkout, so read the listing twice and pack once.
